Bulk Density Apparatus

A powder poured into a cylinder for example will have a specific bulk density; if the cylinder is disturbed the powder particles will move and usually settle closer together resulting in a higher bulk density. As a result the bulk density of powders is usually reported as "freely settled" (or "poured") density as well as "tapped" density.

Working Principle of Bulk Density Apparatus:

The sample volume is determined by loading the loose bulk powder into a graduated measuring cylinder. Attach the measuring cylinder to the tapped assembly. Move the bottom of the tapped assembly through an eccentric gear at the frequency and height specified by international standards causing the measuring cylinder to vibrate up and down. The volume of powder in the measuring cylinder can be reduced to varying degrees depending on its physical properties. The sample tapped density can be calculated by dividing the mass of the sample by the volume after it has been tapped.
