Finely Finished Longpi Black Pottery

Longpi Pottery is an ancient craft known as Longpi Ham to the locals of Longpi Village situated in a remote picturesque part of Manipur in the Northeast corner of India. It is a unique art as the master craftsmen dona t use the pottera s wheel for their beautiful handcrafted creations.
It is made of naturally available and 100% bio-degradable black Serpentinite stone and a special clay. The making of Longpi Ham requires a great amount of dexterity as the internal pressure and external movement of the hands must be well coordinated to produce a perfect piece. Shaped mostly by hand once the products take shape they are dried naturally inside a room for a couple of days before sun drying for a day. These are then smoked by burning wood under a platform avoiding direct flame or heat. Subsequently these are kept inside burning charcoal for a few minutes. These are then finished with an eco-friendly/totally natural polish made from leaves of the Chiron-ni trees from the local flora. The traditional cooking utensils of the village are still the Longpi Ham.
